(Alliance News) - China on Wednesday hailed its ties with the EU as adding "precious stability" to the global economy, as Beijing seeks closer relations with the bloc as its trade war with Washington persists.

"China and the EU complement each other's strengths in economic and trade cooperation, creating mutual benefits and win-win outcomes," foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.

"As major global economies, China and the EU, under the current circumstances, jointly uphold the multilateral trading system and promote trade liberalisation and facilitation," Guo said.

"This will inject precious stability and certainty into the world economy and global trade," he added.

Politico reported Wednesday, citing a European Parliament official, that Beijing was planning to lift sanctions against current and former lawmakers.

Speaking at a regular briefing, Guo did not confirm the report but said ties with the bloc showed "positive momentum".

"European Parliament members are warmly encouraged to make more visits to China," he said.
